I WAS in Washington last week pushing my book, sitting in a restaurant only a few blocks from the White House when the single engine airplane strayed into forbidden territory. My lunch companion was the good-looking redhead Karen Feld who writes for the Washington Examiner. So after CNN cancelled all their interviews to go for hours with a happening that didn't happen, Karen and I had plenty of time to talk. This woman has dish to spare!
She described to me the Ben Bradlee/Sally Quinn roast laid on by the American Newswomen's Club. Power couples Bob Woodward and Elsa Walsh; James Carville and Mary Matalin; Chris and Kathleen Matthews; plus George Stephanopoulos and Alexandra Wentworth; along with columnist Richard Cohen (he was missing his partner Nora Ephron); and Al Hunt and Judy Woodruff spoke. Mr. Hunt said to Ben, the former Washington Post editor of Watergate days: "I think it's very nice she (Sally) let you keep your maiden name." . . . TV's Matthews described Ms. Quinn as a woman who "used a typewriter like an Uzi" . . . Mary Matalin quipped, "If there was any first lady of journalism it would be Jeff Gannon." She added, "Everyone in this town falls into one of three categories. They worship Ben, they respect Ben or they are a Nixon family member." . . . Hubby James Carville noted, "People say Mary and I have a mixed marriage, a Democrat and a Republican. Look at Prince Charles. They've got a mixed marriage ? an Episcopalian and a Clydesdale."
The distinguished Mr. Bradlee had the last word. "What an honor to be roasted by such a distinguished group of hacks. If you weren't on television, no one would have ever heard of any of you, except for Woodward!"
