Grunge singer Courtney Love‘s mom, Linda Carroll, a psychotherapist in Corvallis, Ore., was in town yesterday flogging her book, “Her Mother’s Daughter.” Carroll says though she hasn’t spoken to her daughter, now 41, for more than three years, “my life is tied to hers. She’s my first child.” As for Love’s late hubby, Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain: “He was an incredible father. Watching him with my baby granddaughter, Frances [now 15], made me melt.”On the road to recovery?

Carroll said she and Love have been estranged off and on since her daughter was 16. After Cobain died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the mother and daughter grew further apart. “She’s dealing with a serious drug addiction and trying to get through it,” Carroll told me. “It’s not my unwillingness to reconnect, but she’s not ready. Maybe when she’s on the road to recovery.”

Like mother, like daughter

The author says she hasn’t seen Courtney as a mother, but she sees her granddaughter “intermittently.” “Courtney’s helped Frances stay connected to Kurt’s and my family,” she said. Love’s mom wrote this book because “stories have a tremendous power to heal.” When she penned the book, Carroll said, “I was not in a reactive place with Courtney. It’s about how to live with a challenging relationship with someone you love. Having found my mother, I see my life as full circle.” Carroll was adopted at birth and later found her biological mother, novelist Paula Fox.

Carroll is already at work on her next book, a collaboration with local photographer Karen Ruckman, whom she met in Hawaii 10 years ago. It’s titled “Return to Essence” and is about women’s spirituality.

Dr. Morgan’s magic saves celeb’s canine!

Glinda the White Witch in the Kennedy Center’s production of “Wicked” appreciated Georgetown veterinarian Lee Morgan‘s “witchcraft” last week. Kendra Kassebaum is grateful to Morgan for saving Toto, aka Eddie, her Yorkie. After Dr. Morgan received the emergency call, he diagnosed and then surgically removed the small dog’s bladder stones. What’s more, he even took the pup home for personal TLC during the night. All’s well, and our favorite vet is a hero to another canine and master. And Kassebaum and Eddie are back on the road touring with the “Wicked” production.

Ted to practice what he preached

The Owl Club, the all-male social club for Harvard alums, will have to survive with one fewer member. Sen. Ted Kennedy joined the club 52 years ago, but with today’s standards and after criticizing Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito for ties to a group that discriminates against women, Kennedy said he’s going to resign his membership as fast as he can. And just think of the other advantage: He’ll save $100 a year in dues.

More Dow Jones restructuring

Some Wall Street Journal veterans are saddened by the unceremonious closing of their advertising office in Bethesda yesterday. “That place had a lot of tradition,” said one Journal employee. “Washington is still a vital market and it sends a wrong signal,” said another. And the restructuring goes on. â€-
